Love Island Star's Near-Death Nut Allergy on Dubai Flight

Love Island Star's Terrifying Mid-Air Anaphylactic Shock Experience

Former Love Island star and personal trainer Jack Fowler has revealed a harrowing incident where he believed he was facing death during a flight to Dubai. The reality television personality, now 30 years old, suffered a severe anaphylactic reaction after accidentally consuming a meal containing nuts onboard an Emirates aircraft in 2024.

'Game Over' Moment During Flight Emergency

Fowler described the terrifying experience during an appearance on GK Barry's Saving Grace podcast, recalling how he thought "game over" as his symptoms rapidly escalated. "Well, I'm anaphylactic. So it basically means, if I don't get seen quickly, it's game over," Fowler explained to listeners.

The personal trainer detailed how the emergency unfolded within the first hour of the Dubai-bound flight. "So I had a nut on the way to Dubai, within the first hour, I had it all. EpiPen, I was on the jump seat and everything. It was crazy. I genuinely didn't know what was going to happen," Fowler recounted.

Immediate Life-Threatening Symptoms

Fowler, who first appeared on season 4 of the ITV dating show, experienced immediate and severe physical reactions. "Straight away I knew, my throat was closing up, I couldn't breathe and it was extremely scary for me," he described. The reality star emphasized the rapid progression of symptoms, noting his throat "immediately closed" leaving him struggling to breathe.

When asked by podcast host GK Barry if he believed he was going to die, Fowler responded: "Yeah. I actually thought that was it. I thought, that's it. It could be lights out." The television personality revealed that when he closed his eyes during the emergency, he visualized the words "Game Over" appearing before him.

Airline Menu Controversy and Negligence Claims

Fowler has accused the airline of "complete negligence" regarding the incident. He explained that he specifically asked a flight attendant about nut content in his meal before consuming it. "I just knew something was wrong so I stood up, I went to the air host and I said: 'Excuse me. Is there nuts in this?' And she said no," Fowler recounted.

Despite this assurance, Fowler insisted on checking the menu himself, where he discovered the dish was described as "creamy cashew nut chicken curry." Cashew nuts represent the most dangerous allergen for Fowler personally. "There's this complete negligence here," he stated. "I just think: what is it going to take? What is it going to take until nuts are taken off flights completely?"

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

The incident required immediate emergency intervention onboard the aircraft, including administration of an EpiPen injection. Following the initial treatment, Fowler was rushed to hospital upon landing for further medical care and observation.

Fowler has since appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss the incident publicly and advocate for changes to airline food policies. He questions why nuts continue to be served on flights given the potential risks to passengers with severe allergies.

Airline Response and Safety Considerations

An Emirates spokesperson responded to the incident at the time, stating: "We are sorry to hear of Mr Fowler's experience and our teams on ground are providing him with all possible assistance. The safety and health of our customers is taken very seriously."

The airline clarified their position on allergen management, explaining: "While Emirates aims to cater to customers with specific needs by offering a variety of special meals that cover medical, dietary, and religious requirements, we cannot guarantee a nut-free inflight environment." The spokesperson urged travelers with dietary restrictions or medical conditions to consult the airline's website and their doctors before traveling.

Fowler's experience highlights ongoing debates about allergen management in confined transportation environments and the responsibilities of airlines toward passengers with life-threatening food allergies. The former reality star continues to advocate for policy changes that would better protect vulnerable travelers during air travel.
