From 18 Stone to Size 8: How Nikki Woodgate Lost Nearly Half Her Body Weight
Nikki Woodgate's Journey from 18 Stone to Size 8

From Hiding in the Apartment to Bikini Confidence: A Weight Loss Triumph

Nikki Woodgate's life reached a critical low point during a family holiday in Spain in 2023. Weighing 17 stone 12 pounds and squeezed into size 20 clothing, the 34-year-old compliance manager from Swansea found herself hiding indoors while her partner, parents, and friends enjoyed the sunshine and sangria. "I just didn't want to be there," Nikki recalls. "I was uncomfortable in the heat, my thighs rubbed together, and I couldn't find anything to wear." The turning point came when she saw a photograph of herself with her father, Ian, 65, which she describes as hitting rock bottom.

The Spiral into Unhappiness and Poor Health

Growing up as the "bubbly big friend," Nikki had developed a carefree attitude towards food and drink, consuming whatever she pleased. During the Covid lockdowns, her weight soared as she leaned into this persona, becoming the "loudest in the room" to distract from her size. Her daily routine consisted of wearing the same jeggings and loose blouse, eating McDonald's for breakfast, meal deals with share-size crisps for lunch, and takeaways for dinner, all washed down with multiple beers. By her early 30s, she weighed nearly 18 stone and faced mounting health and emotional issues.

"I was really down, unhappy with how I looked," Nikki admits. "I went out less, didn't want to get dressed, and my social life and self-esteem suffered. I wasn't enjoying life, had knee pain, and was struggling to sleep." The photograph with her father served as a stark wake-up call, prompting her to take action in October 2023 by joining Slimming World, a decision she initially doubted but now wishes she had made years earlier.

A Remarkable Transformation Through Healthy Habits

Nikki's journey began with a surprising first-week loss of 6 pounds, followed by consistent weekly losses of 2-3 pounds. She overhauled her diet, replacing high-calorie snacks with fruit and yoghurt pots, and swapping takeaways for homemade meals like curry with cauliflower rice and salad. By June 2024, the 5ft 5in woman had dropped to 10 stone 10.5 pounds and a size 10, celebrating with a holiday to Tunisia where she wore a bikini in public for the first time in two decades.

By October, Nikki had lost over 8 stone, weighing 9 stone 8.5 pounds and fitting into size 8 clothes. At her last weigh-in, she was 9 stone 11 pounds, marking a total weight loss of 8 stone 1 pound. "Everything has changed for me," she enthuses. "I've got more energy, run up and down mountains with our dogs, and all those aches and pains have disappeared. I love getting dressed now, with a wardrobe full of variety. We used to have just one mirror in the house—now we have them all over, full length. I have confidence and am not hiding in a corner feeling self-conscious."

Inspiring Family Bonds and Shared Success

Nikki's transformation inspired her parents, Debbie, 59, and Ian, to join Slimming World as well. To date, Debbie has lost 5 stone and Ian 3 stone. The family set up a WhatsApp group to cheer each other on, sharing recipes and support, which has strengthened their bonds. They have since moved from Kent to South Wales to be closer to Nikki and her partner, Taran, 34, a business manager, and now enjoy mountain walks together in retirement. "They're enjoying the retirement they dreamed of with nothing to hold them back," Nikki says proudly.

Nikki keeps the original holiday photo as a reminder of how far she has come, but now takes thousands more pictures with confidence. "I'm so proud of myself and my parents," she reflects. "I pinch myself when I see how far we've come." Her story underscores the power of determination and support in achieving lasting health changes.
