Opportunity Knocks Child Star's Devastating Cancer Diagnosis
David Carey, who performed a comedy skit on the iconic television show Opportunity Knocks at just nine years old in 1976, has received a heartbreaking medical diagnosis. The 59-year-old, originally from Blackpool in Lancashire, believed his significant weight loss was simply the result of quitting beer, but the truth was far more sinister.
From Weight Loss to Terminal Diagnosis
In December 2023, Carey experienced dramatic weight reduction, which he attributed to removing beer from his diet. His brother, 63-year-old Geoffrey Tipton, expressed skepticism about this explanation, noting that David had transformed from being "really big, overweight, to a skeleton - really, really thin."
The situation escalated in January 2026 when Carey collapsed twice at his home in Khon Kaen, Thailand, where he has lived for the past 23 years. Rushed to a local hospital, he underwent extensive tests and scans that revealed stage four metastatic lung cancer. The devastating diagnosis included tumors in his brain and chest, with doctors giving him approximately six months to live.
Healthcare Challenges for Foreigners in Thailand
Carey's situation is complicated by his status as a foreign resident in Thailand. Unlike Thai citizens who receive free medical care, foreigners must pay for treatment, and Carey lacked health insurance. His brothers have established a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses, which reportedly cost around £1,000 per hospital visit, with chemotherapy treatments potentially reaching millions.
Geoffrey Tipton, an AI data scientist now living in Hong Kong, explained the family's dilemma: "Thailand doesn't treat foreigners the same way they treat locals. Locals can have free medical care, foreigners can never have that."
Family Ties and Emotional Struggles
Carey moved to Hong Kong in 2002 to work with his brother before meeting his Thai wife, Kanjana Carey. The couple married and settled in Khon Kaen, where they raised their two daughters: Diana, 23, and Edwina, 14. The family now faces the painful reality of Carey's limited prognosis.
Returning to the United Kingdom for treatment presents additional challenges due to immigration rules that would prevent his wife and daughters from accompanying him. Geoffrey revealed his brother's emotional response: "When he got home, he was crying on the phone. He wasn't crying about himself, he was crying about his family."
Brothers Rally Support Through Crowdfunding
Carey's brothers have mobilized to provide financial assistance, but the costs of treatment remain overwhelming. Geoffrey described the family's efforts: "Me and my brothers are all trying to do our part to help but it's not enough. Treatment ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 per treatment, about £1,000 a visit."
Despite the grim prognosis, the family continues to seek support through their GoFundMe campaign, hoping to provide whatever care and comfort possible during Carey's remaining time. The former child star's story serves as a poignant reminder of how easily symptoms can be misinterpreted and the devastating impact of terminal illness on families.
