Prue Leith Opens Up About Health Concerns That Forced Bake Off Departure

Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has candidly revealed that a significant health struggle was the primary reason behind her surprising decision to step down from the beloved television series earlier this year. The culinary expert, aged 86, explained during a recent podcast interview that growing concerns about her physical stability ultimately led to her departure.

The Moment of Realisation During Filming

During an appearance on The Shift podcast, Leith described how she became increasingly aware of her unsteadiness while filming. "I think the thing I found worrying is that I'm not very steady on my pins any more - not as good as I were," she confessed. This realisation became particularly apparent during an outdoor filming session for the show.

The incident occurred in a challenging field location where the production team had requested the judges to dance around. Leith recalled the uneven terrain, noting how co-judge Paul Hollywood and presenter Noel Fielding managed effortlessly while she struggled. "I suddenly realised 'I'm going to go A over T, you know, this is going to be humiliating beyond belief,'" she explained. This marked the first time she had to decline a filming request due to physical limitations.

Gradual Accumulation of Limitations

Leith emphasised that this was not an isolated incident but part of a gradual pattern. "Gradually there had been more and more of those things," she revealed, referring to tasks she could no longer perform comfortably. The judge, who joined Bake Off in 2017 following Mary Berry's departure, acknowledged that her age had become a genuine factor affecting her work.

She also addressed the long-running age-related jokes from co-judge Paul Hollywood, who frequently teased her about being significantly older. "He'd say things like 'Come along deary, upsy daisy', 'time for your nap' or 'time for your tea'," Leith shared. While initially humorous, she admitted that recently she had begun to think "Actually, you're right mate."

Contrasting Moments of Joy on Set

Despite these challenges, Leith reflected on happier moments during her tenure. In her autobiography Being Old and Learning to Love It!, she described dancing with presenter Alison Hammond to a steel band during New Year's episode filming. "Alison Hammond, exuberant as always, was the first up and dancing, and soon I couldn't resist and joined her," she wrote, demonstrating that she still found enjoyment in the show's vibrant atmosphere.

Future Television Possibilities

While Leith has left the British version of Bake Off, she hasn't ruled out future television appearances. During another podcast interview with Davin McCall, she suggested she might consider participating in The American Baking Show if it's recommissioned. "It's all done by the same company and it's a question of what can be got round so I can get a holiday," she explained, acknowledging the demanding schedule of the original series.

Her departure from the British show has paved the way for legendary TV chef Nigella Lawson to join as a judge alongside Paul Hollywood. Leith's honest revelation about her health concerns provides fans with a deeper understanding of her decision, highlighting the physical demands of television production and the realities of aging in the public eye.
