Ryan Sutter Reveals Lyme Disease Battle and Mental Health Insights

Ryan Sutter, the former reality television star best known for appearing on The Bachelorette with his wife Trista Sutter, has spoken openly about his ongoing struggle with Lyme disease. The 51-year-old firefighter shared candid details about the physical and emotional toll of the chronic condition, including a newfound understanding of why some individuals with long-term illnesses contemplate suicide.

Sympathy for Suicidal Thoughts Amid Chronic Illness

In an interview with People magazine, Sutter explained that his diagnosis in 2020, which he publicly announced in 2021, profoundly changed his perspective. "It's the first time I've ever sympathized with suicide," he stated, reflecting on the intense frustration and despair that can accompany persistent health issues. While clarifying that he never personally considered ending his life, Sutter expressed empathy for those who reach a point of feeling hopeless.

"I was never like, 'I need to go commit suicide,' but I understood that people get to this level of frustration where they just feel like they're going to feel like this for the rest of their lives, or be a burden on everybody that they're around," he said. The father of two described moments of questioning his purpose, adding, "You think, I don't know what my purpose in life is, and if there is no purpose to it, if it's just getting up every day and feeling like this..."

Current Health Management and Wellness Focus

Fortunately, Sutter reported that his condition has improved to a manageable state. "I'm at a pretty good place. I think the majority of my days are good, with a few bad ones sprinkled in there," he shared. He has developed strategies to cope with flare-ups, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and preventive measures.

"I've kind of learned how to handle those. If I pay close enough attention, I can feel the onset of things coming on, and then I'll just make sure I don't overdo it or overexert myself, or make sure I'm hydrated and taking all the supplements I'm supposed to take and all that sort of stuff. I just pay closer attention," Sutter explained. He remains committed to maintaining his mental health, asserting, "The mindset I've developed is that it's just not going to be what gets me off the rails."

Empathy for Others and Family Life

Sutter expressed deep compassion for others facing similar health challenges. "It really hurts me to think that so many people are in that kind of pain and don't think they'll ever get out of it," he lamented. He highlighted the struggles of individuals who want to be present for their families but find it difficult to care for themselves.

"To know how many people are out there suffering on a day-to-day basis, who have kids and they have husbands and wives and all this sort of stuff that they want to be able to show up for, and they just struggle to even show up for themselves, it's really a sad situation. I just wish we could find some sort of solution to it," the star said. Looking ahead, Sutter hopes to remain healthy enough to enjoy future moments with his family, including potential grandchildren.

Longstanding Marriage and Health Advocacy

Ryan and Trista Sutter celebrated 22 years of marriage in December, having met on the first season of The Bachelorette in 2003. Their love story culminated in a televised wedding on ABC, which reportedly cost the network $1 million to air. Today, the couple prioritizes health and wellness, with Trista recently using Instagram to promote preventive MRI scans through their partnership with Prenuvo.

"When you’ve been through the kind of medical mysteries that Ryan and I have been through with his Lyme disease and my seizure, we are so grateful for the opportunity to be proactive about our health with @prenuvo," she wrote. Together, they continue to navigate health challenges while advocating for awareness and proactive care.
