Veteran talkSPORT presenter Danny Kelly has publicly announced that he has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. The 69-year-old broadcaster revealed the news at the conclusion of his Wednesday afternoon show alongside co-host Charlie Baker, confirming he will step away from broadcasting to undergo an intensive treatment programme over the coming months.
Shocking Diagnosis After Initial Symptoms
Kelly explained that approximately six weeks ago, he visited his doctor experiencing difficulties with eating, initially suspecting it might be acid reflux. "I thought it was probably acid reflux and he would give me a big bag of Gaviscon. Other tablets are available. Instead, it turns out that I have cancer," Kelly told his listeners. He specified, "To be specific, I have cancer of the oesophagus, a really dangerous thing."
Treatment Plan and Broadcast Hiatus
The broadcaster detailed that after extensive tests and several tense weeks awaiting results, medical professionals have determined the cancer has not spread internally. "The medics say that the thing hasn't spread inside my body and that they can and they will help me," Kelly stated. However, he faces what he described as "a tough and lengthy programme of treatment" involving chemotherapy and surgery.
Kelly confirmed he will be taking an extended break from his broadcasting duties during treatment. "There will be times during this, whole stretches of time where I won't be fit to broadcast," he acknowledged. He expressed gratitude toward talkSPORT management for their supportive approach, noting they have allowed him to determine when he might return to the airwaves in future.
Mental Health and Future Broadcasting
Despite the challenging road ahead, Kelly emphasised his desire to eventually resume broadcasting. "I want to do that and broadcast onwardly because I enjoy it, because I need to have something to look forward into the future, and because therefore, at a time when my physical health's under attack, it will help my mental health," he explained. He thanked the station for granting him autonomy over his return timeline.
Career Highlights and Support
Danny Kelly has been a prominent figure at talkSPORT since 2007, joining permanently the following year. He is renowned for his passionate support of Tottenham Hotspur, famously exclaiming "I love football, Stan, I love it!" during a dramatic 4-4 North London derby draw against Arsenal in 2008. Currently, he hosts the Trans Europe Express show and appears regularly on Hawksbee & Jacobs. Additionally, Kelly presents the Tottenham-focused 'View From The Lane' podcast for The Athletic and previously edited NME and Q magazine.
Following his on-air announcement, Tottenham Hotspur shared a supportive message on social media: "Sending you love and strength from all the Spurs family." Numerous well-wishers have also expressed their support for the beloved broadcaster.
Urgent Health Message to Listeners
Kelly concluded his announcement with a crucial health message, particularly directed toward male listeners. He urged anyone experiencing unusual symptoms to seek medical attention promptly. "99 per cent of the time, it will be nothing. But if it is something, the sooner it's caught, the better the chance of getting it sorted out. Get yourself checked out," he advised.
He signed off by saying, "So that's it, my friends. You'll be hearing me less and less regularly as I concentrate on letting the fabulous medical people do their stuff. Meanwhile, your prayers, best wishes, positive vibes, whatever you can, will be gratefully accepted." Kelly expressed hope that with medical expertise and luck, he would return to broadcasting in the future.
