Torquay Couple's Fatal Drug Mix: Inquest Reveals Painkiller Dependency Tragedy

A married couple discovered lifeless in their Torquay living room had developed a severe dependency on painkillers and died following a lethal combination of prescription and illicit drugs, an inquest has detailed. Alan Thompson, aged 54, and his wife Michelle, 51, were found by their daughter at their home in Torquay on April 18, 2024. Police officers investigated the double fatality but quickly eliminated any suspicious circumstances from their inquiry.

Descent into Addiction and Dependency

The inquest at Exeter Coroner's Court was informed that the couple struggled with various medical conditions and had developed an addiction to pregabalin, a medication often prescribed for nerve pain and anxiety. It was the deadly mix of that drug alongside other substances which ultimately proved fatal. The pair had settled down to sleep in their living room and tragically never awoke from their drug-induced state.

Their daughter, Astrid, told the hearing how her parents' dependency had reduced them to "shells of their former selves - like pregabalin zombies" in the months leading up to their deaths. Despite the heartbreaking nature of their passing, she emphasised that it did not diminish the deep affection they held for their children or their unwavering commitment to each other. She described Michelle as "the sweetest, most perfect woman ever" who sacrificed greatly for her family.

Alan, a former general builder who had retired from his trade, was remembered as the "funniest man" who "gave the best hugs" to his children, according to reports from Devon Live. Emergency services and police officers attended the scene after the couple were discovered unresponsive at 7.30pm on that fateful evening.

Medical Challenges and Escalating Drug Use

Coroner Alison Longhorn explained that Alan had ceased working eighteen months before his death due to COPD, arthritis, and additional health complications. Michelle was initially prescribed pregabalin in 2020 to manage chronic back pain, her daughter revealed, and she rapidly developed a dependency on the medication.

A year later, Alan began taking pregabalin in a misguided attempt to "be on the same level" with his partner. The couple would exhaust their prescriptions rapidly before turning to street dealers for supplementary supplies. From 2021 onwards, their addiction intensified, leaving them irritable and aggressive when deprived of the tablets.

Both became so heavily dependent that they were frequently "off their heads" at home and could not function without the pills. Yet neither individual would acknowledge they had a serious problem with substance abuse.

They also consumed cannabis, took cocaine, and drank alcohol during the pandemic period, gradually withdrawing from the outside world until, by 2024, neither ventured outdoors. On April 17, Michelle, heavily medicated, dozed off on the sofa. Alan consumed tablets from a blister pack before falling asleep in a chair nearby.

Discovery and Post-Mortem Findings

Their bodies were discovered the following day. Paramedics attended but were unable to revive them. Half-empty blister packs containing lime green tablets were scattered throughout the property.

The couple's daughter, Astrid, did not recognise these tablets as their regular medication, and an internet search suggested they were "some sort of morphine". A post-mortem examination confirmed an overdose involving morphine, pregabalin, diazepam, cannabis, and other substances.

The pathologist concluded that morphine, when combined with the other drugs, likely triggered a fatal suppression of their respiratory systems. Coroner Alison Longhorn stated: "Both Alan and Michelle had some medical challenges and were retired due to ill health. Both took too many medications and simply stopped functioning properly and struggled with day to day life."

"They were addicted to pregabalin and sourced other drugs illegally." She explained that the day before their deaths, both were "clearly under the influence" and fell asleep. There were no suspicious circumstances and neither intended to take their own life.

They died "having taken a number of drugs, both prescribed and illicit, the combination of which was fatal," she added. The pair had a casual attitude towards the drugs and likely did not comprehend the lethal consequences of what they were consuming.

She recorded both deaths as drug-related. In a statement, Astrid acknowledged that both her parents should have exercised greater responsibility regarding what they were taking, but she did not want it to paint a misleading picture of who they were as people.

Remembering the Individuals Behind the Tragedy

She described Michelle as a "warm, comforting person' who was incredibly caring. She could turn the magic on for Christmas every single year. She was fun-loving and adventurous. She was amazing."

"My dad was the funniest man who would make anyone laugh and was friends with everyone." She said he was the type of person who would get up and prepare her meal if she finished work late and was a protector at heart.

"He gave the best hugs that wrap around and and you would know everything would be okay," she said. "They were married in 2001 and had their ups and downs but were incredibly loving. Dad doted on mum. Although losing both is horrific I find some peace in that they are together. Neither would have coped without the other."
