Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann snapped at a female journalist during his post-match press conference after his team's World Cup exit. The 38-year-old coach was visibly frustrated following Germany's 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32, which ended their tournament run.
Nagelsmann loses temper with reporter
The press conference turned hostile when a journalist repeatedly questioned Nagelsmann about Germany's slow build-up play. After initially admitting, "We had a very slow build-up play; it took ages to shift it from wing to wing," the reporter pressed him again on the same topic. Nagelsmann erupted: "Yes, I just told you. The build-up play was too slow. I've already said that three times now."
When the reporter then asked about his future, Nagelsmann responded: "I am available. If the DFB wants it, then I will do the Euro 2028, and if not then they have to tell me. I'm not someone who runs away."
Germany's shocking elimination
The four-time world champions crashed out in the last 32 after a 1-1 draw followed by a penalty shootout. This marked the first time Germany had ever lost a World Cup penalty shootout. A disallowed German goal sparked fury among supporters, and the defeat extended Germany's streak of failing to win a knockout match since their 2014 World Cup triumph.
Nagelsmann, who became the youngest manager in a World Cup knockout stage in 40 years, faces mounting pressure. German media have called for his replacement by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who is currently working as a World Cup analyst for German broadcaster Magenta TV.
Nagelsmann's assessment
In his post-match briefing, Nagelsmann did not hold back: "If you cannot beat Paraguay over 120 minutes then you are deservedly eliminated. You should not depend on the opponents' luck or no luck." He added, "If you are eliminated by Paraguay you are just not a first-class football team. I am very disappointed."
Nagelsmann's contract runs until after Euro 2028, but his future remains uncertain. The DFB will decide whether to keep him. Paraguay will face France in the round of 16 after France beat Sweden 3-0.
