Mum's Simple Observation Uncovers Devastating Brain Tumour in Six-Year-Old Daughter

Christmas 2025 brought pure delight to six-year-old Sienna when she unwrapped tickets to Disney World, fulfilling a dream shared by countless children and their families to visit the magical Florida resort. However, within mere weeks, all that joy was cruelly snatched away when a routine observation by her mother led to a devastating medical diagnosis.

The Fateful Tablet Moment That Changed Everything

Sienna's mum Emma recalled the moment that triggered their medical journey: "Four weeks ago, she was just on her tablet, just a completely normal day, when I noticed she was holding it a bit closer than normal. It was a weekend so I thought, 'oh, you know, she's all right, I'll book an appointment for her at the opticians for Monday.'"

That seemingly minor observation proved to be critically important. At the optician's appointment on 9 February, medical professionals noticed significant swelling behind Sienna's eyes around her optic nerve. Later that same evening, a brain scan confirmed the presence of a tumour, and she was urgently transported by ambulance to Noah's Ark Children's Hospital.

Three Weeks of Intensive Treatment and Diagnosis

Sienna remained at the hospital for three weeks undergoing intensive treatment, including brain surgery and an emergency shunt procedure. Medical professionals have since confirmed that Sienna's tumour is a Grade 1 glioma - a slow-growing, benign (non-cancerous) brain tumour that frequently occurs in children and teenagers.

Heartbreakingly, the tumour is positioned in Sienna's optic pathway, pressing against her optic nerve and leaving her completely blind. Medics have stated the tumour cannot be surgically removed, and Sienna has now started an 18-month course of chemotherapy. Her family continues to hold onto hope that she may recover some vision in time.

Remarkable Resilience Amidst Devastating Circumstances

Despite the frightening and overwhelming experience of losing her sight, Sienna has maintained a remarkably positive and cheerful outlook. Her mum Emma explained: "It's unbelievable really, that she is still so positive and so happy. She is still laughing and playing with her siblings and her friends."

Sienna's dad Amy-Leigh added: "We've had so much support from the hospital, the girl's schools and our family and friends. It's scary but we are being strong for her." He described his daughter as "happy" and "bubbly," noting that even hospital nurses couldn't believe how cheerful and playful she remained throughout her ordeal.

Disney Dream Complicated by Insurance Challenges

The family continues to hope that Sienna can still experience the wonder of Disney World, where accessibility provisions for visually impaired guests would enable her to be "treated like the princess she is." However, their travel insurance was voided after her diagnosis, and the only policy they have been able to secure costs approximately £6,000.

To help make Sienna's dream trip a reality, her family has established a GoFundMe page. All donations will go toward covering the substantial insurance costs, with any leftover funds being used to enhance the holiday experience and support Noah's Ark Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.

The family's journey from Christmas joy to medical crisis serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of trusting parental instincts when something seems amiss with a child's health.
