Summer is just around the corner, and while many are planning holidays or looking forward to sunny days, now is the perfect time to prevent flies from becoming a nuisance. Last year, I discovered a straightforward method to keep them out of your home for good.
The Hidden Culprit: Your Sink Drain
Last July, I battled a severe fly problem in my kitchen. I scrubbed my bin, kept fruit off worktops, and set out vinegar traps, but the pests kept returning. Frustrated, I kept windows closed despite the heat, until I realised my sink drain was attracting them.
Flies are drawn to food waste, and sink drains collect food scraps daily. Many people don't realise how much residue goes down the drain, and flies' sharp senses detect rotting matter from outside. A warm, moist drain with food scraps is a perfect breeding ground. If left unchecked, flies can lay eggs, leading to an infestation.
The 30-Second Solution
You don't need harsh chemicals or hours of scrubbing. Simply boil water in your kettle and slowly pour it down the drain every evening before bed. This 30-second task clears food residue and eliminates odours that attract flies, also destroying any lurking insects. I did this daily throughout July and August and had no further fly trouble, allowing me to keep windows open all day.
Additional Tips
- Place apple vinegar traps around the house.
- Change bin bags daily.
- Position herb plants near windows, as flies dislike their scent.
I avoid insect repellent sprays indoors because I have a dog, so this simple solution was a huge relief. Try it for a fly-free summer.
