Manchester City Likely Guilty of Some Charges, Says Lawyer

Manchester City are likely to be found guilty of at least some of the 115 charges brought by the Premier League, according to sports lawyer Tom Murray. The founding partner of Three Points law firm said he expects the club to be found in breach of financial regulations, though the final verdict may still be over two years away due to a protracted appeals process.

The charges relate to alleged violations spanning nine years from 2009, including failures to submit accurate financial documentation and provide precise details of player and manager remuneration. The Premier League inquiry began in 2019, and the charges were made public in 2023. City deny any wrongdoing and claim to have 'irrefutable evidence' supporting their position.

Murray told the Price of Football podcast that he has spoken to barristers working on the case, who are unsure when the decision will be released. 'I think Manchester City are going to be found liable, in breach of something,' he said. 'With the number of charges there are, I don't think they are going to get away with this.' He added that an appeal is likely, meaning a final outcome could be two years away.

However, former City financial adviser Stefan Borson believes a decision is imminent, possibly before the end of the season. 'June would be most likely, that's the feeling,' he said. Borson described the 18-month wait for a written decision as 'ridiculous' but noted signs that the process is nearing completion.

The hearing, which began in September 2024, ran for 10 weeks. The case is unprecedented in English football due to the sheer number and seriousness of the allegations.
