Defence giant Babcock International has announced a significant leadership transition, with current chief executive David Lockwood set to retire by the end of 2026. The London-based company, a major contractor for the Ministry of Defence, has selected Harry Holt, the head of its nuclear division, as his successor.
Leadership Transition at Defence Contractor
Babcock International confirmed that David Lockwood will step down from his role as chief executive by December 2026, concluding a tenure of more than five years at the helm. During his leadership, Mr Lockwood implemented a substantial turnaround strategy that focused on streamlining operations across the business.
This strategic overhaul involved selling numerous assets to generate cash and implementing job cuts throughout the organisation. His departure marks the end of a period dedicated to restructuring and repositioning the defence contractor for future growth.
Nuclear Division Successor
Harry Holt, currently serving as chief executive of Babcock's nuclear division, has been appointed as the incoming chief executive. Mr Holt brings extensive experience to the role, having previously held executive positions at Rolls-Royce and served as an officer in the British Army.
Before assuming the top position, Mr Holt will initially take on the role of deputy chief executive, working alongside Mr Lockwood to ensure a smooth transition of leadership responsibilities. This phased approach aims to maintain continuity during the handover period.
Nuclear Business Growth
Under Mr Holt's leadership, Babcock's nuclear sector has demonstrated remarkable expansion, with revenues increasing by approximately 54% over the past two financial years. Both the defence and civil businesses within the nuclear division have shown significant growth during this period.
The company has identified nuclear as a burgeoning sector with strong demand for government spending worldwide. Babcock's recent performance reflects this trend, with continued revenue growth in recent months driven by new-build clean energy projects and submarine support work.
Global Projects and Strategic Focus
Babcock International is involved in numerous high-profile global projects that underscore its strategic importance in defence and security sectors. These include participation in a £4 billion maritime programme in Indonesia designed to strengthen the region's navy and fishing fleets while enhancing food security.
The company also provides crucial support for the US Virginia Class nuclear submarine programme based in Rosyth, Scotland. These international engagements demonstrate Babcock's expanding global footprint and technical capabilities in complex defence systems.
In response to his appointment, Harry Holt expressed being "deeply honoured to have the opportunity to lead Babcock through its next chapter".
