Never Put Soft Plastics in Household Recycling: Where to Take Them Instead
Soft Plastics: Where to Recycle Them Properly

Soft plastics, such as crisp packets, bubble wrap, and plastic grocery bags, remain one of the most stubborn environmental challenges. These flexible materials cannot be recycled through standard household collections in the UK, making correct disposal tricky.

Why Soft Plastics Are Problematic

Unlike rigid plastics like milk bottles, soft plastics require specialist processing facilities, which the UK lacks in sufficient numbers. According to consumer group Which?, most collected soft plastics are downcycled into lower-quality items like bin bags or garden furniture, rather than being turned into new packaging.

The Danger of Putting Them in Household Recycling

When soft plastics end up in general recycling, they can cause significant problems. Erha Andini, a chemical engineering expert and science communicator based in Delaware, explained to The Independent: "Once they get shredded or even before, a lot of times they just clog recycling equipment." Clogged machinery can halt the entire recycling process and cause damage.

Data from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) reveals that 81% of people place non-recyclable items in their recycling bins. Contamination remains a persistent issue, particularly with items like drinking glasses and food pouches.

Where to Recycle Soft Plastics

While some councils offer kerbside collection for soft plastics, it is still uncommon. The recommended approach is to gather all soft plastics and drop them off at a nearby large supermarket. Many major supermarkets have dedicated collection points where you can deposit these plastics.

The Importance of Correct Recycling

Although the UK currently lacks sufficient facilities to process all collected soft plastics, increased demand will drive greater supply. Proper recycling is crucial to ensure these materials are handled correctly and to reduce environmental harm.
