Dutch Royal Couple Enjoys White House Stay with Trumps as UK Monarch's Visit Draws Criticism
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands arrived at the White House yesterday for an overnight stay as guests of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The Dutch royals, invited by the 79-year-old American president, participated in a dinner and stayed for one night during their three-day working visit to Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Miami.
Elegant Arrival and Warm Welcome
Queen Maxima, 54, looked elegant in a long-sleeved orange dress, while Melania Trump opted for a bold, monochrome ensemble, both appearing glamorous for the occasion. President Trump and his wife waited on a red carpet to welcome the Dutch royal couple and Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten for an evening described as opulent.
King Willem-Alexander, 58, exchanged a handshake and warm smiles with Trump upon arrival, both dressed in navy suits, as their wives stood beaming beside them. The visit included formal photographs and a dinner at the executive residence, highlighting diplomatic courtesies between the two nations.
Controversy Over King Charles' Upcoming US Visit
This Dutch royal trip precedes a similar planned visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House at the end of the month, which has sparked controversy. Yesterday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejected fresh demands to cancel the King's upcoming state visit, despite critics labeling President Trump a 'dangerous and corrupt gangster'.
Starmer emphasized that Charles' trip to Washington with the Queen would celebrate the two nations' shared history, particularly marking 250 years since the US won independence. Engagements are expected to include a glittering State Banquet at the White House hosted by Trump.
Questions About Diplomatic Timing
However, questions have been raised about whether such visits are appropriate given President Trump's frequent criticism of the UK, which has strained the 'special relationship' and left wider Transatlantic relations at a low not seen in decades. The Dutch royal visit occurs amid this tense backdrop, adding to the diplomatic significance of the event.
Clarifying Past Interactions with Trump
The Dutch royals' visit follows an incident last year where Queen Maxima appeared to 'mock' Donald Trump live on television. During the NATO summit in July, while posing for pictures with Trump and her husband, Maxima seemed to mimic the way Trump's mouth moved, pulling a face before turning towards cameras.
Eagle-eyed social media users and CNN editor Vani Mehrotra noted the split-second reaction, sparking speculation online. However, during the royal family's annual summer photo session later that month, Maxima set the record straight with Dutch outlet AD.
She clarified that she was saying 'thank you' to someone who had helped and described meeting the president as a 'pleasant experience'. Meanwhile, her eldest daughter, 22-year-old Princess Catharina-Amalia and heir to the throne, said it was 'really cool' to have the opportunity to meet 'the president of America'.
In footage from the NATO event, the trio was seen smiling for cameras as Trump gave a thumbs-up, with the King and Trump sharing small talk and a laugh while Maxima remained on the sidelines, continuing to smile. This context adds depth to the current White House visit, highlighting ongoing diplomatic engagements despite past misunderstandings.
