Game of Thrones Star Michael Patrick Dies at 35

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Michael Patrick, a talented actor recognised for his roles in television series like Game of Thrones and acclaimed theatre productions. Patrick, who also went by the name Michael Campbell, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the Northern Ireland Hospice. He was 35 years old and had been bravely fighting Motor Neurone Disease for three years prior to his death.

A Final Message of Hope and Resilience

In his last social media update, shared on Instagram back in February, Michael Patrick conveyed a poignant message of determination. Despite the severe challenges posed by his illness, he stated he still had "lots to live for" and detailed his decision to cancel previously arranged plans for a tracheostomy procedure. The actor explained that medical consultations had highlighted significant risks and implications, including a potential hospital stay of six to twelve months due to staffing shortages.

Medical Prognosis and Personal Choices

Patrick revealed that his neurologist had estimated he might have approximately one year left to live, though he held onto hope for experimental drug trials to extend that time. He expressed a clear preference not to spend a substantial portion of his remaining days confined to a hospital bed. The actor also expressed profound gratitude for donations to a GoFundMe campaign, noting that the funds would support specialist care during his final stages of life.

His post concluded with a touching reference to his godson, Micheál, visiting him in hospital, and the reaffirmation that he still had "lots planned." Tragically, Michael Patrick passed away just weeks after sharing this update, highlighting the rapid progression of Motor Neurone Disease.

Tributes from Family and the Arts Community

Michael's wife, Naomi, announced his passing on social media, describing him as an inspiration who lived life with joy, spirit, and infectious laughter. She emphasised that he was a "titan of a ginger haired man" and expressed gratitude for the support received during his illness.

The Lyric Theatre Belfast, where Patrick regularly performed, paid heartfelt tribute through executive producer Jimmy Fay. He praised Michael's strength, dignity, and resilience in continuing to create dynamic work despite his diagnosis. Notably, Patrick performed on the Lyric stage as recently as last November in his autobiographical piece, My Right Foot.

A Distinguished Career in Acting

Michael Patrick trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London after studying science at the University of Cambridge. His television credits include roles in Blue Lights, Game of Thrones, Soft Border Patrol, and My Left Nut. In theatre, he gained widespread recognition for his performance as Richard III in a wheelchair, which earned him the Judges' Award at the Stage Awards in January 2025.

Even after his diagnosis, Patrick continued to act, finding that performing and writing provided a positive focus away from his illness. His dedication was honoured with the Overcoming Adversity Award at the Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards in 2025 for his advocacy and ongoing work.

Understanding Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease remains a condition with no fully understood cause and no treatments to halt its progression. Doctors primarily focus on alleviating the worst symptoms. In the UK, around 5,000 adults live with MND, with a lifetime risk of one in 300 of developing it.

The disease leads to progressive muscle weakness, often starting with symptoms like stiff or weak hands, weak legs and feet causing frequent tripping, and muscle twitches or cramps. As it advances, sufferers may experience severe difficulties with breathing, swallowing, and speaking, eventually losing the ability to walk or move. Life expectancy for about half of those diagnosed is between two and five years from symptom onset, with symptoms typically worsening rapidly.

Michael Patrick is survived by his wife Naomi, his mother Pauline, siblings Kate, Maurice, and Hannah, and his nephew Michael. His legacy as a gifted actor and a courageous individual continues to inspire those who knew him and followed his journey.
