Richard Osman's Film Blind Spots Leave Wife Ingrid Oliver Stunned
Television personality Richard Osman has revealed a surprising gap in his cinematic knowledge that left his wife, actress and comedian Ingrid Oliver, utterly gobsmacked during their early dating days. The 55-year-old presenter, known for shows like Pointless and Richard Osman's House of Games, confessed to never having seen iconic Hollywood films such as The Sound of Music and Top Gun, describing them as "blind spots" in his viewing history.
Shocking Confessions on Podcast
During an appearance on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, Osman shared the moment he dropped this bombshell. "I had a lot more blind spots before I married Ingrid," he explained. "Ingrid would start talking to me about The Sound of Music and I'd go, 'Oh, I've never seen The Sound of Music.' And she'd be like, 'I'm sorry.'"
Osman recounted their humorous exchange, where Ingrid questioned how he could have missed such a classic. He cheekily retorted by asking if she had seen the "1979 FA Cup final when Alan Sunderland scored in the last minute," highlighting their different cultural interests. "That's the kind of stuff I was watching," he said, though he added, "Spoiler alert, I have now seen The Sound of Music."
From Blind Spots to Beloved Classics
Osman admitted that, like many people, he thought he knew these films from clips but discovered their full magic upon watching. "Then you watch it and you go, 'Oh my God, this is amazing, this is why people like The Sound of Music,'" he said. "There's a reason that some of these iconic films are iconic."
His confession about Top Gun was even more shocking to Ingrid. "I hadn't seen Top Gun, which I think was even worse," Osman revealed. "She put that right almost immediately; I think that was like third date we had to go see Top Gun." Co-host Marina Hyde remarked it was a "great third date" suggestion, to which Osman responded, "Yeah, at a drive-in."
Additional Films and Disney Avoidance
Other classics on Osman's unwatched list included West Side Story and Mary Poppins. However, he made it clear there's one major studio he'll never explore. "Almost every Disney movie I have not seen and will never see," he stated. "It just doesn't speak to me."
He explained that while he watched Pixar films like Monsters Inc and Toy Story with his children during their "golden age," he never engaged with Disney growing up and has no plans to start. "I will never watch Disney at all," he insisted.
A Shared Journey with The Sopranos
Osman also disclosed his television blind spots, notably never having watched The Sopranos. "I had never watched The Sopranos for a different reason," he said. "I knew I would be incredibly excited to watch it at some point, but I knew I wanted to watch it with somebody."
In a romantic twist, he found that Ingrid shared this sentiment. Early in their relationship, she told him, "I've never seen Sopranos and the reason I've never seen it is because I keep waiting for that person to turn up." The couple decided to wait until after they were married to start the series and are now enjoying it together.
Richard Osman, who began his career in the 90s writing for shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Have I Got News for You, met Ingrid Oliver on the set of Richard Osman's House of Games. Oliver is known for her roles in series such as Doctor Who. Their shared journey through film and television highlights how even well-known figures can have surprising gaps in popular culture, often leading to heartfelt and humorous moments in relationships.
