Robert Aramayo's BAFTA Triumph: From Hull to Hollywood Stardom
Robert Aramayo could scarcely contain his shock and overwhelming emotions as he accepted the prestigious Lead Actor award at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday night. The 33-year-old actor, visibly moved, took to the stage after triumphing over formidable competitors including Timothee Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio for his powerful performance in the Tourette's syndrome drama I Swear.
An Emotional Victory Speech
Addressing a room filled with Hollywood luminaries, Robert looked directly at Leonardo DiCaprio and quipped, 'I can’t believe I’m looking at people like you never mind that I’m stood here.' His heartfelt speech resonated throughout the auditorium, as he expressed disbelief at his win. Fighting back tears, he added, 'I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award. Everyone in this category blows me away.'
The camera captured poignant moments, including DiCaprio applauding politely and Chalamet managing a smile. Most touching was the reaction of Robert's father, who leaped to his feet, shouting with delight before embracing his son in a celebratory hug.
From Humble Beginnings to Juilliard
Robert Aramayo's journey to BAFTA glory began in Hull, Yorkshire, where he discovered acting at just seven years old, landing the role of Bugsy Malone in a primary school production. His talent for mimicry often got him into trouble for impersonating teachers, but it signaled a burgeoning career.
At age ten, he joined the Hull Truck Youth Theatre, honing his craft before achieving a remarkable feat at sixteen. In 2011, he won a coveted place at New York's prestigious Juilliard School, becoming the only British student among 4,000 admitted. His father likened the achievement to 'hearing your son had been picked to play football for Barcelona.'
Career Breakthroughs and Major Roles
Robert's big break came at Juilliard when his performance in A Clockwork Orange earned him his first film role in Lost In Florence. He gained wider recognition in 2016 by joining the cast of Game of Thrones, portraying a young Eddard Stark in seasons six and seven.
Subsequent roles included Netflix's psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes in 2019, and in 2020, he was cast as Elrond in Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However, I Swear has catapulted him to new heights, earning him both the Lead Actor and the EE Rising Star Award at the BAFTAs.
The Challenge of Portraying John Davidson
In I Swear, Robert plays campaigner John Davidson, diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at a time when little was understood about the condition. The film depicts Davidson's early years in Galashiels following his diagnosis. Robert described the role as 'the biggest challenge' of his career, emphasizing the responsibility of authentically portraying someone with a condition he does not personally have.
He told BBC Radio Humberside, 'It was a real challenge, probably the biggest challenge I've done. Having John there and having his guidance and help was invaluable.' In an interview with Rolling Stone, Robert expressed hope that the film would highlight Davidson's incredible story, rather than focusing on awards.
Double BAFTA Winner and Future Prospects
Earlier in the evening, Robert also clinched the EE Rising Star Award, the only BAFTA category voted for by the public, beating nominees including Miles Caton and Archie Madekwe. In his acceptance speech, he thanked his family, partner, and the I Swear team, calling John Davidson 'the most amazing person I have ever met.'
Despite his rising fame, Robert maintains a private personal life, with his Instagram account only dating back to September. In his downtime, he enjoys exercising, watching 70s films with friends, or playing the board game Catan. He recently made his stage debut in Guess How Much I Love You? at London's Royal Court Theatre.
With two BAFTAs now to his name, Robert Aramayo's career appears poised for even greater success, marking a significant milestone for the actor from Hull who dared to dream big.
