SNL UK Announces Bridgerton and White Lotus Stars as Next Hosts
Saturday Night Live UK has revealed its next two guest presenters as the sketch show prepares to return from a mid-season break. The British version of the iconic comedy series will feature Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton on 25 April, with the rock band Foo Fighters as musical guests. Following that, Aimee Lou Wood, known for her roles in Sex Education and The White Lotus, will take the helm on 2 May, accompanied by the singer Meek.
Show's Journey and Ratings Performance
Since its launch on Sky last month, SNL UK has been hosted by a lineup of notable figures including Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, Riz Ahmed, and Jack Whitehall. The show is currently on a brief hiatus but will resume with Coughlan, who made a cameo appearance in the debut episode. Musical guests in previous episodes have included Wet Leg, Wolf Alice, Kasabian, and Jorja Smith.
Viewer reception has been generally positive, though ratings have seen a decline from 226,000 for the premiere to 130,100 in recent episodes. Despite this drop, the figures still surpass the average viewership for Sky One in that time slot, indicating a solid performance in a competitive landscape.
Controversy and Critical Reception
Wood's upcoming hosting role follows a controversy involving the US version of SNL, which issued a rare apology to the actor after a 2025 episode mocked her appearance. In a skit parodying her White Lotus character, SNL cast member Sarah Sherman wore exaggerated prosthetic teeth, which Wood criticized on Instagram as "unfunny and mean." She clarified that while she appreciates clever parody, the joke focused on fluoride and felt like a punch down rather than a fair caricature.
In contrast, comedian and actor Nick Mohammed praised SNL UK, calling it "the best thing that's happened to British comedy since" the release of Ricky Gervais's The Office in 2001. He expressed admiration for the show's execution, noting that previous attempts to emulate SNL in the UK lacked the courage to fully commit to the format.
Analysis and Future Outlook
A review by The Independent highlighted that while SNL UK successfully assembles a talented cast and resists relying solely on big names, it adheres closely to the traditional SNL formula without much innovation. This includes the standard host monologue, timely skits, fake adverts, and musical guests. The review suggested that the show, produced by Lorne Michaels from afar with director Liz Clare and head writer Jonno Johnson, captures the essence of its American counterpart but may lack a distinct spark of British irreverence.
As SNL UK continues to navigate its place in the British comedy scene, the upcoming episodes with Coughlan and Wood are poised to attract attention, blending star power with musical talent. The show's ability to balance homage to its origins with fresh content will be key to sustaining viewer interest and ratings in the coming weeks.
