Prime Minister Keir Starmer Condemns Israeli Strikes on Lebanon Following Ceasefire Announcement
During a diplomatic tour of Gulf nations, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has strongly criticised Israeli military actions in Lebanon that occurred after the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Sir Keir described these strikes as "wrong" and insisted they "should stop", emphasising his firm stance on the matter.
Ceasefire Under Strain as Violence Escalates
The Prime Minister's comments come amid growing tensions that threaten the two-week truce brokered by US President Donald Trump. This ceasefire was established after President Trump issued stark warnings, including a statement that "a whole civilisation will die tonight"—language Sir Keir explicitly stated he would never personally use in diplomatic discourse.
Israeli bombardments targeting the Hezbollah militant group in Beirut have resulted in the deadliest day in Lebanon since the conflict began, raising serious questions about whether Lebanon was included in the ceasefire terms. The situation has further deteriorated with Tehran's response: closing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz oil shipping channel in retaliation to the Israeli strikes.
Technicalities Versus Principles in Ceasefire Compliance
When questioned about whether these attacks constitute a breach of the US-Iran ceasefire agreement, Sir Keir admitted it was "hard to say" without full access to all details. However, he clarified that his opposition is not merely a technical assessment but a matter of principle. "The question isn't a technical one of whether it's a breach of the agreement or not," he explained during an interview with ITV's Talking Politics podcast in Bahrain. "It should be included in a ceasefire, and that's the important part of the overall approach."
UK Monitoring Use of Bases for Collective Defence
In addition to addressing the Lebanon strikes, the Prime Minister revealed that the United Kingdom is closely monitoring the use of UK military bases by Washington. This oversight aims to ensure these facilities are utilised solely for collective self-defence purposes, rather than supporting offensive operations against Iran. Sir Keir stressed the importance of adhering to defensive protocols to maintain regional stability.
Diplomatic Tour Amid Regional Unrest
Sir Keir arrived in Bahrain on Thursday afternoon as part of a broader regional tour, which also included stops in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This visit underscores the UK's active engagement in Middle Eastern diplomacy, particularly as the ceasefire shows signs of strain. The Prime Minister's statements highlight a commitment to principled foreign policy and de-escalation efforts in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
