Poll: Who Should Be Chancellor in Andy Burnham's Government?
Poll: Who Should Be Chancellor in Burnham's Government?

Andy Burnham is reportedly bringing together his top team ahead of marching on No10. But who could bag what, under a potential Burnham government? Reports are circulating in Westminster that the 'King in the North', who took the train south yesterday after his Makerfield by-election win, could impose a new Chancellor - or be forced to keep Rachel Reeves.

Potential Candidates for Chancellor

Shabana Mahmood

Current Home Secretary, Ms Mahmood is reported to be safe in her current job. But there are suggestions she might want a promotion to one of the other great offices of state. Should she bag the keys to No11, she's kept her cards close to her chest as to what she might seek to do with her hands on the levels of the Treasury.

Wes Streeting

Former health secretary, Mr Streeting stepped down to throw the gauntlet on a leadership race. Less than a month later he u-turned and backed Burnham as boss, with rumours he's been promised a plum posting in return. Just weeks ago he acknowledged the tax burden was too high, and even lavished praise on Thatcherite chancellor Nigel Lawson - adding welfare should be a hand up, not hand out.

Ed Miliband

A net zero megafan, Mr Miliband ran the Labour Party and failed to win an election at the helm himself. Now with members of his own team embedded in the Burnham camp, Mr Miliband may be eying the red box of the Chancellor for his own. He's likely to want to supercharge net zero spending, and the transition away from oil and gas.

Miatta Fahnbulleh

Something of a mystery, Ms Fahnbulleh is a left-wing economist who wants to rewire the modern money system. Said to be at the very heart of Burnham's transition team, she hasn't given interviews or spoken about her potential agenda should she walk up the road and step into No11.

Rachel Reeves

Current keeper of the purse strings, Rachel Reeves may well be the safer choice despite her tax and spend policies. Markets often dislike change, and Mr Burnham may need to keep them content if he intends to outlast Liz Truss - who infamously spun out of office after the markets reacted badly to her pledges.
