French Coastguard Rescues 78 Migrants After Channel Crossing Engine Failure
French Coastguard Rescues 78 Migrants in Channel Engine Failure

The French coastguard has successfully rescued seventy-eight migrants after the engine of their small vessel failed during an attempted crossing of the English Channel from Belgium. The French maritime prefecture confirmed it deployed multiple vessels following reports of numerous migrant boats setting off towards Britain.

Rescue Operation Details

On Saturday, the authority issued a statement explaining: 'Following an engine failure of the migrant boat, the coastguard vessel rescued 78 people, then disembarked them at the quay in Calais for care by the rescue services on land.' The statement further noted that migrants determined to reach the United Kingdom often refuse assistance from French authorities until faced with extreme emergencies.

Recent Channel Crossing Statistics

This failed crossing follows another rescue on Thursday, where twenty-five people were saved after embarking from Belgium and France. However, these numbers are dwarfed by successful crossings. Official figures reveal that 3,863 migrants have arrived in Britain by small boat so far this year.

Recent daily totals highlight the ongoing challenge: on Thursday alone, 144 migrants arrived via two small boats, and on Friday, 116 entered aboard three vessels. The persistent surge in crossings has prompted significant changes in UK border security leadership.

Border Security Leadership Change

After failing to effectively reduce the number of crossings, the Home Office confirmed on Friday that the UK's head of border security command, Martin Hewitt, will step down in March after eighteen months in the role. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed Hewitt, a former senior police officer, shortly after taking office, specifically tasking him with curbing small boat Channel crossings.

During Hewitt's tenure, crossings have remained at elevated levels, with 58,910 people making the journey since his appointment. His time in office also witnessed the second-highest annual total of Channel crossings, with 41,472 people arriving in the UK by small boat last year.

French Coastguard Warning

A spokesperson for the French coastguard has issued a stern warning, urging others not to attempt the dangerous crossing. They emphasized: 'This maritime sector is one of the busiest areas in the world and weather conditions are often difficult. It is therefore a particularly dangerous area, even when the sea seems fine.'

The rescue operation underscores the ongoing humanitarian and security challenges in the Channel, as migrants continue to risk perilous journeys in precarious boats despite repeated warnings and enforcement efforts.
