Tragedy at Texas High School as Student Shoots Teacher Before Suicide
Authorities in Texas confirmed on Monday that a 15-year-old student shot a teacher at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in San Antonio before fatally shooting himself. The incident, which occurred at the Comal Independent School District campus, resulted in no other injuries, but left the school community in shock.
Lockdown and Student Accounts
The school was placed on lockdown at 8:34 a.m., just before classes were scheduled to begin at 8:55 a.m. Students described hearing loud bangs coming from a second-floor room, followed by screaming and yelling. One student reported hearing five shots, while another said their debate teacher quickly instructed students to get inside a classroom for safety.
The male student died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office. The teacher was transported to a hospital, but their condition remains unclear as authorities have not provided an update. The sheriff’s office has not disclosed any potential motive for the shooting.
Aftermath and Parental Concerns
Following the incident, students were bused to a nearby middle school, where parents waited in long lines—some praying—to be reunited with their children. Jesse Lopez, a parent, expressed concern about his daughter’s return to school, noting her autism and likely fear. “She’ll be afraid to go back, she’ll be real afraid to go back,” Lopez told KSAT-TV.
School Profile and Background
Hill Country College Preparatory High School, which opened in August 2020 with a freshman class, now serves grades nine through 12 and has approximately 260 students enrolled this school year. The school focuses on a STEAM curriculum—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math—with electives including cybersecurity and engineering, aimed at preparing students for college.
This tragic event underscores ongoing concerns about school safety and mental health in educational settings across the United States.
