The HM Passport Office has issued a warning to British citizens applying for passports, advising that incorrect applications could be rejected or delayed. With summer travel approaching, millions are preparing to fly abroad, and the Passport Office has taken to social media to remind applicants of the strict rules that must be followed.
Key Photo Requirements
One of the most common issues is the passport photograph. The Passport Office emphasises that digital photos must be taken within the last month, have a plain background, contain no other objects or people, and be free of red-eye or shadows. The photo must be clear, in colour, unaltered by software, and between 50KB and 10MB in size, with dimensions of at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall.
How to Take a Compliant Photo
Applicants can use a photo booth or shop, or take a photo at home. However, the Passport Office warns that photos from a booth or shop are more likely to be approved. If using your own device, ensure your head, shoulders, and upper body are visible, and do not crop the photo yourself. You must face forward, have a plain expression with mouth closed, eyes open and visible, no hair in front of eyes, and no head covering unless for religious or medical reasons. Glasses are not recommended unless necessary, and if worn, must not be tinted or cause glare.
Special Rules for Children
For babies and young children, the rules are slightly different. Children under six do not need to look directly at the camera or have a plain expression. Infants under one do not need to have their eyes open, and their head can be supported by a hand as long as the hand is not visible. Babies should lie on a plain light-coloured sheet, with the photo taken from above.
The Passport Office advises applicants to double-check all details before submitting to avoid delays. Additional information is available on the government website.
