Davina Perrin is at peace with her Women's T20 World Cup snub, not least because she will be sidelined for the next few weeks with a hamstring strain. The 19-year-old was left out of England's 15-strong squad as selectors opted for experience, despite her stunning 42-ball century in The Hundred last year showcasing her immense potential.
Missed Opportunities
Perrin saw the writing on the wall after a modest debut season in Australia's Big Bash League and just 37 runs in three innings during England's intra-squad contests in South Africa in March. She learned of her omission via a message just before the squad announcement. "It was more just 'keep scoring runs', pretty short and sweet," she told the Press Association. "It's part and parcel of the journey. I had opportunities over the winter in the Big Bash but I didn't quite take those."
Any hopes of being on standby were dashed when she tore her hamstring while jogging to prevent a boundary for Warwickshire on May 6. "I was running at 60 per cent and as I was decelerating, my hammy just went," she explained. She will be out of action until at least the end of June.
Looking Ahead
Perrin is now focusing on her return for The Hundred, having been snapped up by Birmingham Phoenix for £50,000. "I've still got youth on my side so I'll keep using that," she added. "I've still got so many more experiences ahead of me to learn from and I just look forward to those, more than anything." She remains committed to improving: "Even after having such a successful season last year, I still wanted to go back to my coach at Warwickshire and change my technique a bit... I think the most important thing for me right now is keep growing, keep setting the bar high and keep trying my best."
