Celebrity Traitors 2026 Lacks Last Year's Sports Star Magic

The second season of BBC's Celebrity Traitors has assembled one of the most high-profile casts ever seen on a reality TV show, but industry insiders note it lacks the standout sports star that defined the previous series. Filming is underway at the show's Highlands castle, with actors, comedians, and fashion icons among the contestants.

The lineup includes Richard E Grant, Michael Sheen, Jerry Hall, Bella Ramsey, Miranda Hart, Romesh Ranganathan, and James Acaster. Peter Fincham, former BBC One controller, called it 'the most impressive lineup ever recruited for a reality show in the UK', noting that many participants would normally be considered unreachable for such a format.

Stephen Lambert, CEO of producer Studio Lambert, said celebrities are drawn primarily by their love of the game, not promotion. 'Almost without exception, the first reason is that they're fans of the show,' he said, adding that personal motivations range from showing a different side of themselves to being dared by grandchildren.

Fiona Campbell, BBC's interim director of unscripted content, revealed producers received 'surprising positive approaches' due to the show's popularity. The intense but short filming schedule, lack of embarrassing tasks, and absence of physical demands like hothouse training are cited as key attractions.

However, compared to the first celebrity series which featured a prominent sports star, the 2026 cast lacks a similar marquee name from athletics. Casting experts emphasise that success depends on personality mix rather than fame alone. 'The perfect cast isn't the most famous one, it's the one where everyone brings something different,' Lambert said.
