Swiss Police Brace for Eurovision Protests Amid Israel Participation

Basel is set to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 amid heightened security concerns, with Swiss police preparing for potential protests over Israel's participation. Around 1,300 police officers will be on duty, supported by the Swiss Armed Forces, federal police, and reinforcements from Germany and France. The contest runs from Tuesday to Saturday, including two semi-finals and the grand final.

Adrian Plachesi, head of communications for Basel police, told PA news agency that the event poses an 'increased risk of terror attacks' from extremists and potential 'cyber attacks' on city infrastructure. In response, police have increased video surveillance and implemented road closures. No permission has been granted for protests, but officers are positioned for possible pro-Palestinian demonstrations, with warnings to intervene if public safety is compromised.

Local activists, Basel for Palestine, attempted to display Palestinian flags at Sunday's Turquoise Carpet event. Further protests are planned for Saturday at 7pm in the city centre. Israel has advised its citizens to avoid 'hot spots and these demonstrations, which could escalate into violence', and to minimise Israeli or Jewish symbols in public spaces.

The contest follows Switzerland's Nemo victory in 2024 with 'The Code'. This year's Swiss entry is Basel-born Zoe Me, who collaborated with Scottish singer Ili and creative director Theo Adams. Favourites include Sweden's KAJ with the song 'Bara Bada Bastu', the first Swedish-language entry for Sweden since the 1990s. Other notable entries include Israeli singer Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the October 7 2023 Hamas attacks.

Plachesi advised UK fans to 'have fun', remember emergency number 112, and download the Welcome Home – Basel app for assistance. The event promises a festive street, live music, and the Eurovision Village, with rumours of a possible appearance by Celine Dion.
