Met Office Warns of Strong Winds for May Bank Holiday

The Met Office has issued a warning that strong winds and heavy showers could disrupt plans for the early May bank holiday weekend, as low pressure systems move in. Brits are being told to brace for cold and windy weather over the long weekend, which includes Monday, May 4.

After a brief spell of calmer conditions, forecasters predict a significant shift towards more unsettled weather. In its latest outlook, the Met Office stated: "High pressure is likely to lie close to the UK at the start of this period. Most places will be dry with sunny spells and light winds, although there could be some overnight mist and fog."

However, the picture is set to change quickly. The Met Office added: "Into the first week of May, conditions will probably become more changeable with low pressure systems becoming more likely. This means an increasing chance of showers or longer spells of rain, with a risk of strong winds at times. Temperatures are likely to be close to or slightly above normal."

The shift could spell trouble for bank holiday plans, with blustery gusts and downpours threatening outdoor events, travel, and staycations across the UK. According to Birmingham Live, experts warn it will not stop there.

Looking further ahead, the Met Office warned the unsettled pattern could persist well into mid-May: "Low pressure systems will probably dominate across the UK at the start of this period. This means showers or longer spells of rain are likely at times, heavy in places with a risk of strong winds. Temperatures will probably be close to or slightly below normal."

Later in the month, more settled and drier conditions may begin to develop, with temperatures perhaps rising slightly above normal. After weeks of mixed spring weather, the latest forecast suggests Brits may need to keep umbrellas and jackets close at hand, as the bank holiday weekend shapes up to be anything but a washout-free escape.
