Kate Nicholas, who shot to fame alongside her dancing Border Collie, Gin, on Britain's Got Talent in 2008, has led a remarkable life since her television success. The pair captured the nation's hearts during the show's second series, performing extraordinary dance routines to tracks like Moby's rendition of the James Bond theme, earning praise from Simon Cowell. Although they finished behind dance group Signature, Kate and Gin's story continued.
From TV Stardom to Military Service
After Britain's Got Talent, Kate wrote a book titled Kate and Gin, detailing how she taught her dog astonishing tricks. She then enlisted in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, combining her passion for animals with a desire to make a difference. She was deployed as a military working dog handler on a tour of Afghanistan with the 1st Military Working Dogs Regiment.
A Horrific Dog Attack
In April 2024, while walking her three dogs near her home, Kate was attacked by a man's four dogs. Despite his efforts to restrain them, the dogs set upon her pets. When she intervened, she was mauled repeatedly, sustaining puncture wounds to her knee, hand, and arm. Her dog Dash was rushed to the vet and fought for survival, Ice bore substantial wounds, and Zoom needed stitches after being thrown over a fence to safety. The man faced four dangerous dog offences, and three of his animals were ordered to be destroyed. Kate received a small amount of compensation.
Finding Solace in Dog Training
Despite the ordeal, Kate found a new calling in dog training. Using the same methods she employed to teach Gin to dance, she now runs Fort K9, focusing on obedience and behavioural correction. Her Instagram page showcases her work, and she writes: "Dog training is more than just obedience—it's about building a strong bond and supporting the well-being of both dog and owner. Fort K9 is a positive, supportive community where we train, learn, and grow together."
In a recent post from 2025, she posed with a beautiful Border Collie and captioned the image: "Motivation isn't a given—it's something we build every single session," and "Reward effort. Use what your dog finds reinforcing. Set them up for success. Be their cheerleader. Because they're giving you their all."
