The creator of Channel 4's Falling has revealed the real-life inspiration behind this 'moving' and controversial drama. The six-part series follows Anna (Keeley Hawes), a devoted nun who falls deeply in love with a charismatic Catholic priest, David (Paapa Essiedu), after decades in a convent. This unexpected bond challenges their faith and relationship with God.
Is Falling Based on a True Story?
While Falling is entirely fictional, its concept originated from a genuine real-life love story. Creator Jack Thorne, known for Netflix's Adolescence, explained to the Royal Television Society that his longtime collaborator George Faber brought the idea to him. Faber, an executive producer on the show, discovered an article about an actual romance between a nun and a priest and shared it with Thorne.
Thorne said: 'It was an inspiration, a jumping-off point.' He added: 'I don't know why George thought I was the right writer or how he knew I'd be interested, but he has a weird sort of radar that operates unlike anyone else's.'
Initially planning a break after Adolescence, Thorne found himself immersed in researching how the last rites work. 'All my previous thoughts of wandering around and reading more went out the window because I became immersed in trying to understand how the last rites work. That's my life and I love it,' he said.
Personal Connection to Love at First Sight
Thorne also revealed that he experienced love at first sight, much like the characters Anna and David. 'That's how my marriage worked. While I wasn't a priest, I was living on my own in Luton, writing all the time, watching TV, sleeping and going to Labour party meetings every now and again. And then Rachel came along and my life changed,' he said.
Falling premieres tonight, Tuesday, May 19, at 9pm on Channel 4.
