Chelsea are reportedly closing in on their fifth summer signing, with World Cup star Valentin Barco poised for a Premier League return. The Argentina international, who has been named in Lionel Scaloni's squad for the 2026 World Cup, is expected to join the Blues from sister club Strasbourg.
Barco's Journey to Stamford Bridge
The 21-year-old left-back initially moved to Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in January 2025 before making the switch permanent for a reported £8 million. Under the guidance of former Chelsea assistant Liam Rosenior, Barco has been transformed from a traditional left-back into a versatile midfield option, showcasing his ability to push forward and create chances.
This season, Barco has recorded nine assists and three goals across all competitions, earning him a spot in Argentina's World Cup squad. His potential arrival at Chelsea would provide much-needed cover for Marc Cucurella, who has just two years remaining on his contract and has hinted at a possible departure.
A Versatile Addition
Barco's ability to operate as a left-back, midfielder, or left winger makes him a valuable asset for incoming manager Xabi Alonso. The youngster's versatility could prove crucial as Chelsea face uncertainty over the futures of Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer.
With the BlueCo network facilitating the transfer, any fee is expected to be minimal, making Barco a shrewd piece of business. Reports as early as April suggested an agreement was already in place, and the deal could be announced imminently.
Barco's departure from Strasbourg was confirmed in a social media post, where he thanked the club, his teammates, and the fans. He wrote: "Today I say goodbye to this club. I always gave everything on the pitch in every game for this shirt. I want to thank my team-mates, who made everything easier for me."
As Chelsea continue to build for the future under Todd Boehly's ownership, Barco represents the fifth summer signing, following the acquisitions of Denner, Dastan Satpaev, Geovany Quenda, and Emmanuel Emegha.
