Karamo Brown, a star of the hit Netflix series Queer Eye, has opened up about a toxic on-set environment that led to his fallout with the cast and his decision to skip promotional events for the show's final season. In a candid interview, Brown alleged years of mental and emotional abuse, bullying, and unchecked bad behavior from executives and production staff.
Boundaries and Allegations
Brown stated that he established boundaries with his co-stars due to what he described as a toxic dynamic. He claimed the situation escalated when his mother overheard co-stars speaking negatively about him on set, making him feel like an outsider. Brown said, "I had to protect my mental health, and that meant stepping back."
Production Company Response
ITV America and Scout Productions, the production companies behind Queer Eye, denied the allegations. In a statement, they asserted that they maintained a respectful environment and addressed all concerns appropriately. "We take the well-being of our cast and crew seriously," the statement read.
Relapse and Mental Health Struggles
Brown also disclosed that he relapsed in 2018 during the show's third season after 12 years of sobriety. He attributed the relapse to depression and feeling trapped, despite his role as a mental health advisor on the show. "I was supposed to be the one helping others, but I was drowning myself," he admitted.
The revelations have sparked discussions about mental health support in the entertainment industry. Brown's decision to speak out has been praised by fans and mental health advocates, who hope it will encourage others to prioritize their well-being.
