Marseille 'Tired' of Mason Greenwood, Fines Ex-Man Utd Star

Marseille have grown increasingly frustrated with Mason Greenwood's conduct, with the former Manchester United forward reportedly fined for his attitude and lack of commitment. According to French outlet L'Equipe, the Ligue 1 club are 'tired' of Greenwood's 'lack of effort' and failure to show 'basic gratitude', leading to a fractured relationship with sporting director Medhi Benatia.

Greenwood's Time at Marseille

Greenwood, 24, joined Marseille in 2024 from Manchester United for approximately £27 million, signing a five-year contract. Since arriving in France, he has recorded impressive statistics, scoring 47 goals and providing 16 assists in 79 appearances. However, his off-field behaviour has become a growing concern for the club.

Behavioural Issues and Fines

Reports indicate that Greenwood has remained in a 'world of his own', refusing to participate in mandatory French lessons, with English still used in the dressing room. Club officials have resorted to fines in an attempt to change his attitude, but to little avail. His relationship with sporting director Medhi Benatia has deteriorated to the point where the two men are said to be 'completely ignoring' each other daily.

There is now a reported divide within the club, and Greenwood is believed to be anticipating an inevitable exit. However, a departure is not expected to be 'straightforward'. Marseille had hoped to sell Greenwood at a profit, but his value has dropped due to inconsistent performances in the second half of the season.

Future Prospects

A return to the Premier League is considered unlikely for Greenwood, but there is reported interest from Serie A and La Liga. His last goal came in a 1-0 victory over Toulouse on March 7, and he endured a difficult outing in a 3-0 defeat at relegated Nantes. He was relegated to the bench against Nice last month, sparking speculation of a falling out with head coach Habib Beye.

Beye dismissed these rumours, stating that Greenwood has been hampered by a minor injury. 'Mason we have looked at since the start of the week, he is very limited by the injury from Lille. It's been two games that he's played with a lot of pain, we can't put him in danger,' Beye said.

Marseille and Greenwood are next in action when they travel to Le Havre on Sunday, a crucial match as the club aims to secure European football for next season.
