Prince Andrew's Fall From Grace Continues With Spy Scandal

Prince Andrew's long-running fall from grace shows no sign of ending, with fresh humiliation after a business associate was barred from the UK over fears he could be a Chinese spy. The Duke of York, once a celebrated Falklands War hero, has seen his reputation shattered by his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and subsequent legal battles.

The businessman, described as a “confidant” by Andrew, was denied entry to the UK, a decision upheld on appeal. Judges noted he had secured an “unusual degree of trust from a senior member of the royal family who was prepared to enter into business activities with him.” Tom Tugendhat, former security minister, called the episode “extremely embarrassing” and warned of Chinese efforts to gain influence in the UK.

Andrew’s downfall began in the 1990s with his friendship with Epstein, whom he met through Ghislaine Maxwell. In 2015, Virginia Giuffre alleged she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she was 17. A disastrous 2019 BBC interview, in which he claimed he couldn’t have sweated during the encounter, led to him stepping back from public duties. In 2022, the Queen stripped him of military roles and patronages, and he settled a US civil lawsuit with Giuffre, paying a substantial sum.

Now stripped of his £1 million annual allowance, Andrew faces pressure from King Charles to leave Royal Lodge for the smaller Frogmore Cottage. Author Andrew Lownie has called for full disclosure of Andrew’s trips abroad during his decade as a trade envoy, saying the prince’s banishment from royal life is now complete.
