Country music icon Billy Ray Cyrus has publicly defended Donald Trump, stating that "being president's a tough job" in a recent interview with Sky News. The 64-year-old singer, father to Miley and Noah Cyrus, addressed his political shift and endorsement of Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Political Reflections and Family Influence
During the interview, which primarily focused on his forthcoming album "The Hill," host Wilfred Frost shifted topics to ask about President Trump. Cyrus, who previously identified as a lifelong Democrat, explained his perspective by referencing his father's political career. "My dad was a Democrat and served in the Kentucky legislature for over 20 years, but my dad always said, 'When the president asks you to do something, you do it, son,'" Cyrus revealed.
Endorsement and Performance at Inaugural Ball
In August 2024, Cyrus publicly endorsed Trump on Instagram, sharing a photo with the former president. This support culminated in a performance at Trump's presidential inaugural ball in January 2025, celebrating the commencement of his second term. However, the event faced technical difficulties and was widely criticized online as an "epic disaster."
Cyrus responded to the criticism by posting a video of himself performing his 1992 hit "Achy Breaky Heart" on Instagram, captioning it: "This was the most fun part of the Liberty Ball! And if you didn't see it... you just had to be there."
Family Concerns and Personal Struggles
The performance controversy prompted Cyrus's son, Trace, to express concern on social media. In an emotional Instagram post, Trace wrote about his father: "Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognise now. It seems this world has beaten you down and it's become obvious to everyone but you." He added that the family had been "genuinely worried" for years.
Album Release and Future Projects
Despite the political discussions, Cyrus's new album "The Hill" remains a focus. Produced by his son Braison and featuring a duet with Noah Cyrus, the album is scheduled for release on June 16. The interview highlighted this creative endeavor while touching on broader themes of family and public service.
Cyrus concluded his political comments by emphasizing unity: "I've had both Democratic and Republican presidents. Served with Bill Clinton, with President Obama. Mr. Bush, Mr. Bush's dad. And Mr. Trump, you know, being president's a tough job. I pray for our country. I pray for our president and I pray for our world."
