Carrick: Man Utd Had to 'Dig Deep' in Sunderland Draw

Michael Carrick admitted Manchester United had to “dig deep at times” to earn a goalless Premier League draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats dominated proceedings, with Chemsdine Talbi and Noah Sadiki going close early on, while Senne Lammens denied Brian Brobbey after the break. Lutsharel Geertruida also hit the post for the hosts.

United’s best chances came from Joshua Zirkzee, who nodded over in the first half, and late efforts from Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo were blocked. Despite the lacklustre display, Carrick focused on the positives after securing a point, which came on the back of Champions League qualification secured with victory over Liverpool last weekend.

“It was a tough game. Credit to Sunderland, we had to dig deep at times,” Carrick said. “To take something from the game when you’re not at your best is a good trait. There were changes and sometimes you’re trying to find rhythm, but I liked a lot of things that gave us a foundation. The point and clean sheet is OK.”

Carrick made five changes from the Liverpool win, with Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko absent. Providing an update, he said: “Cas will be fine, it’s not a major issue. Ben we’ll have to see; he’s been carrying a shin problem.”

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris expressed disappointment at not winning after a controlled performance, their first home game since a 5-0 thrashing by Nottingham Forest. “We created enough chances to score and defended well,” he said. “We were not clinical enough in the final third.” The point leaves Sunderland 12th with two games remaining.
