President Donald Trump has claimed that the White House was a “s*** house” when he moved in, in his latest foul-mouthed outburst. The remarks were made during a speech delivered Monday in honor of Police Week, which was laden with digs at the presidential building’s decor and allusions to complaints from First Lady Melania Trump.
Trump's Grievances with the White House
“This place was not properly taken care of,” Trump claimed. “I was told by my wife: ‘You have to act presidential, so don’t use foul language.’ I won’t,” he continued. “Therefore, normally, I would have said it was a s*** house, but I don’t want to say that.”
The president went on to list his grievances with the building and bragged that he had improved it. “The columns were falling down, the plaster was falling off,” he claimed. “This place is tippy top now, including all the brand new beautiful stone. I paid for it myself,” he added.
Controversial Ballroom and Rose Garden Renovations
Trump also referenced his controversial ballroom, for which the White House’s East Wing was bulldozed to make way. According to Trump, the site will be the “most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world.” The commander-in-chief claimed that the ballroom will be “very safe,” adding that it would be fitted with 6-inch glass.
The speech was delivered in the White House Rose Garden, which has also been subject to renovations during Trump’s second stint in the Oval Office. Trump infamously paved over much of the garden early in his tenure, dubbing the space the “Rose Garden Club.” During his speech, he alluded to a disagreement with Melania over the garden, which she famously remodeled in 2020.
“I want to welcome you to the Rose Garden,” he said. “You know, this is a whole new thing. This used to be grass. And I took a little heat from my wife. She said, ‘Darling, what did you do with my grass?’ I said, ‘People got tired of standing in mud.’” Trump suggested that the grass was “always soaking wet” because the White House was built on “wetland.” “The reporters, they walk out with their shoes. The female reporters, in particular, weren’t thrilled,” he added.
Support from Law Enforcement
The president also made a bold claim about the levels of support he enjoys from law enforcement during the Police Week address. “I won about 98 percent of the police in this country,” he claimed. “And we’re trying to figure out who are the other 2 percent, because nobody can figure that one out.”
