Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick launched a furious tirade against referee Stuart Attwell, labelling his penalty decisions as "mental" and "astonishing" after his side were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw at Bournemouth. The Red Devils twice surrendered the lead in a chaotic Premier League encounter, with captain Harry Maguire receiving a straight red card for a foul in the area.
Carrick's Fury Over Inconsistent Penalty Calls
Carrick's anger stemmed from what he perceived as glaring inconsistencies in the officiating. The United boss was incensed that his team were denied a penalty for Adrien Truffert's challenge on winger Amad Diallo, only for Bournemouth to immediately race up the other end and score an equaliser. Moments later, Maguire was dismissed for a challenge on Evanilson, which allowed Junior Kroupi to level the scores again from the penalty spot.
"For him to give one penalty and not the other... I find it crazy. I cannot understand it. Mental. It's astonishing," Carrick fumed in his post-match interview. "One of them must be wrong. A big opportunity to go 2-0 up and we get one penalty and not the other. It's exactly the same thing really - a two-handed grab."
A Pivotal Moment That Sparked Chaos
Carrick argued that both incidents were clear penalties and that the referee's failure to award the second one transformed the game. "I think they're both penalties and it's a massive moment in the game and it ended up chaos after that," he stated. "Massive moment and I don't understand how you can give one and not the other - it's crazy. It's as obvious as you can get - you've already given one so to not give the other one."
The United manager expressed bewilderment at the logic, insisting that if the referee believed the first incident warranted a penalty, the second identical challenge certainly did as well. "It's clear, if that's what he believes is a penalty to start with then the second one has to be. I don't understand how you can't give that," Carrick added.
Silver Linings and Contract Talks
Despite his frustration, Carrick found a positive in his team's resilience after going down to ten men. "I was really pleased when we went to 10 men we saw the game out and took a point that's a real positive," he acknowledged. "In the end the way it went you can lose those games so to take a point in the end we'll take that but disappointed not to take all three."
Separately, Carrick confirmed that Manchester United are actively working on new contract deals for both Harry Maguire and young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has recently earned a recall to the England squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. "It's contract negotiations with all players are ongoing. You hope whatever that is it gets done in the right way, they've both been great and back in the England squad," Carrick noted, highlighting the club's commitment to securing their key players' futures.
