Defending Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek was knocked out in the third round on Saturday, July 4, 2026, by 21-year-old Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. The match, played on Centre Court, ended with a score of 7-6 (11-9), 6-2. Eala, seeded 29th, became the first player from the Philippines ever to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.
Historic Upset on Centre Court
Świątek, 25, a six-time Grand Slam champion and world number three, entered the match as the heavy favourite. She had won her maiden Wimbledon title the previous year with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Amanda Anisimova. However, Eala stunned the crowd by taking the first set in a marathon tie-break, 21-19, before closing out the match in straight sets.
BBC presenter Clare Balding interrupted the broadcast of Arthur Fery's match to deliver the news. Speaking from the BBC studios at Wimbledon, she said: "Let us bring you up to date with a major shock. The defending champion, Iga Świątek, is out of Wimbledon, and Alex Eala is the first player from the Philippines ever to reach the fourth round here."
Emotional Reaction from Eala
After securing the match-winning point, Eala collapsed to the ground before rising to acknowledge her opponent. In her on-court interview, an emotional Eala reflected on her journey. "I'm really emotional. For someone like Iga who has won so many Grand Slams, or maybe like Serena or Venus, this achievement may seem small but for someone who grew up in the Philippines it is huge," she said as the crowd cheered. "I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school with my ruffled socks, light-up shoes, and chubby cheeks, so to younger me, this is everything. But, obviously, just because I'm emotional does not mean I'm satisfied, so next round let's go!"
Impact and What's Next
Eala's victory marks a turning point for tennis in the Philippines and sets up a fourth-round appearance. The tournament continues with coverage available on BBC iPlayer.
