Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to the World Cup to monitor Lucas Herrington, an 18-year-old centre-back currently playing for Colorado Rapids in MLS. The defender, who is also attracting interest from Barcelona, has been earning praise for his performances since moving from Brisbane Roar.
Herrington earned a spot in Australia's 26-man World Cup squad, and according to Metro, Liverpool scouts are in the USA, Canada and Mexico to watch him closely. The Reds have been tracking him throughout the season but face competition from Barcelona, who have reportedly had an opening bid rejected by Colorado.
Speaking about his future, Herrington said: 'I just want to keep enjoying it, taking it day by day. I’m not really thinking too far in the future. It’s just Colorado, and now just focusing on the World Cup.' He added that his support network keeps him grounded and focused on his game.
Rapids president Padraig Smith praised the youngster, saying: 'He is an exceptionally talented young man with the world at his feet. When our scouts identified him, we knew he had a high ceiling.' Former Arsenal defender Rob Holding also commented: 'He’s super composed, super relaxed, on the ball, under pressure. He’s a really good player.'
Australia are set to face Paraguay in their next World Cup match, with victory securing a spot in the last 32. Herrington could make his tournament debut in that fixture.
