Liverpool Secure £60m Jacquet Deal as Transfer Window Closes with Four Departures
Liverpool Sign Jacquet, Lose Four Players in January Window

Liverpool have pulled off a significant coup in the January transfer window by securing a verbal agreement to sign French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for a fee that could reach £60 million. The move sees the Reds usurp Chelsea in the race for the highly-rated centre-back, with the player opting for Anfield over Stamford Bridge, reportedly due to the prospect of more playing time.

Late Swoop for Defensive Reinforcement

For much of the final week of the window, it appeared that Jacquet was destined for Chelsea. However, Liverpool made a late intervention to bolster their defensive options, completing a medical for the player on Monday. The deal involves a fixed fee of £55 million, with an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons.

This acquisition follows a summer where Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, but missed out on England defender Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City. The pursuit of Jacquet may have been motivated by this setback, as the club's backline faces potential changes.

Defensive Dynamics at Anfield

Liverpool's defence has been impacted by injuries and contract situations. Ibrahima Konaté is out of contract in the summer, while Joe Gomez has been linked with a move away. The lack of continuity has been a concern, making Jacquet's arrival a strategic move for the future.

In addition to Jacquet, Liverpool signed lesser-known defender Mor Talla Ndiaye from Amitie for £1 million. Despite injuries to full-backs like Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, no further defensive reinforcements were brought in before the deadline.

Departures and Loan Moves

While major players have remained at Anfield, four departures were confirmed as the window closed. James Norris, the 22-year-old, has left permanently to join Shelbourne for an undisclosed fee.

Three younger players have been sent out on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Luke Chambers and Lewis Koumas have both moved to the Championship, joining Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City respectively. Defender Calum Scanlon has headed to League One leaders Cardiff City, who are pushing for promotion.

Key Players Staying Put

Despite speculation, Andy Robertson has remained at Liverpool, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The left-back's future is likely to be a talking point until the summer.

Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai also stays, although he recently admitted that contract talks have not progressed as hoped. He stated, "It’s not in my hands. There is no progression, but if the right offer comes then let’s see."

Liverpool's January business reflects a focus on long-term defensive planning, with Jacquet set to join in the summer, while managing squad depth through loans and a permanent exit.
