England's Euro 2025 preparations have suffered another significant blow as vice-captain Millie Bright has withdrawn from the squad, citing an inability to give 100% mentally or physically. The 31-year-old Chelsea defender made the announcement on Instagram, stating that stepping back is the right decision for her health and future.
Bright's withdrawal follows the retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby, meaning only six players from the starting XI that won Euro 2022 remain available. The Lionesses will now rely on the return of Alex Greenwood, who has recovered from a knee injury, to fill the centre-back role.
Despite the setbacks, manager Sarina Wiegman has positive news regarding Lauren Hemp, Georgia Stanway, and Alex Greenwood, who all came through recent matches fit. Lauren James is also expected to be named in the final 23-player squad despite a hamstring problem.
England begin their Euro 2025 campaign against France on 5 July, followed by matches against the Netherlands and Wales in Group D.
