Tottenham Captain Romero Slams 'Disgraceful' Squad Depth in Hierarchy Criticism
Romero Criticises Tottenham Squad Depth as 'Disgraceful'

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has launched a stinging public criticism of the club's squad depth, describing the situation as "disgraceful" in what appears to be another pointed dig at the Spurs hierarchy.

Playing Through Illness Against Manchester City

The Argentinian defender revealed he played through illness during Tottenham's Premier League clash against Manchester City this weekend, explaining his decision by highlighting the club's limited options. Romero was eventually substituted at half-time during the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with his side appearing completely lifeless and facing a two-goal deficit at that stage.

Remarkable Comeback Despite Challenges

Remarkably, Tottenham managed to salvage a point after the restart with Dominic Solanke scoring twice, including an extraordinary scorpion kick goal. This comeback provided some relief for Thomas Frank's struggling side, though it did little to temper Romero's frustration with the broader situation at the club.

Social Media Outburst Targets Club Leadership

Taking to Instagram after the match, Romero posted: "Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible. I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn't feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available — unbelievable but true and disgraceful."

The Tottenham captain continued: "We'll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that's left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans."

Pattern of Criticism Emerging

This incident marks the latest in a series of public criticisms from Romero directed at Tottenham's leadership. Less than a month ago, following Tottenham's 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth, the World Cup winner questioned why "other people" at the club remain silent during difficult periods.

Romero claimed this pattern "has been happening for several years," adding that certain individuals "only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies." He later deleted and re-uploaded the post without the reference to "lies," but the message about dissatisfaction with club leadership remained clear.

Previous Comments About Club Obstacles

The defender has previously highlighted what he described as "the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist" at Tottenham when paying tribute to sacked manager Ange Postecoglou in June. These consistent public remarks suggest growing frustration within the squad about the club's direction and resources.

Leadership Changes at Tottenham

The criticism comes during a period of significant transition at Tottenham. Daniel Levy departed from his role as chairman in September, while chief executive Vinai Venkatesham was only appointed in April. Co-sporting director Johan Lange has been in position since 2023, and majority owners ENIC, operated by the Lewis family trust, have recently begun making more public statements through sources close to the family.

Despite these leadership changes, Romero's comments suggest ongoing concerns about squad depth and resource allocation that continue to affect the team's Premier League campaign.
