Tottenham's Search for a Harry Kane Successor: Will Lankshear Steps into the Spotlight
Harry Kane's sensational decade at Tottenham Hotspur left an indelible mark, and filling his boots remains a monumental challenge. However, signs are emerging that a potential successor could be on the horizon for the upcoming season. Will Lankshear, a young striker from the Spurs academy, is generating buzz with his performances on loan at Oxford United, drawing early comparisons to the legendary forward.
Drawing Parallels: Lankshear's Traits and Areas for Growth
While it would be unfair to burden Lankshear with the immediate pressure of being labelled Tottenham's 'next Harry Kane', his current trajectory invites such speculation. Malachi Obrey, an Oxford Mail reporter who has closely monitored Lankshear all season, notes similarities between the two players. "I definitely see similarities," Obrey told the Mirror. "Kane is an incredibly well-rounded footballer, not only was his finishing arguably the best in the Premier League, but he also was a top-three passer."
Obrey highlighted that Lankshear exhibits traits of a physical No. 9 who is clever and can finish, with all his goals this season coming inside the box. However, he pointed out areas for improvement, such as developing the ability to take shots from range. "There are definitely traits there that you can see, but there are other parts of his game that he'll need to improve on if he wants to hit those heights," Obrey added, expressing confidence that Lankshear could become a Premier League-level striker given the high regard from journalists, coaches, and Spurs insiders.
Season Overview: From Challenges to Breakthrough Performances
Lankshear joined Oxford United in August 2025 after a challenging 2024/25 season, which included a red card in the Europa League and a goalless loan spell at West Brom. This season, however, has been a revelation. He has scored 10 goals and provided three assists for Oxford, starting strongly with three goals in his first five games. Despite obstacles like a managerial change, Lankshear adapted well, becoming a fan favourite under new manager Matt Bloomfield.
"He seemed quite raw but as the season has gone on, he’s rounded his game quite well," Obrey observed. "Since Matt Bloomfield has come in, he’s established himself as the No. 9 and he has become a real fan favourite." Importantly, nearly half of his goal contributions have come in Oxford's last seven matches, showcasing his ability to deliver in crucial moments during their relegation battle.
Character and Impact: Thriving Under Pressure
Lankshear's character has been a standout feature, with Obrey noting his resilience in high-pressure situations. "I think he is someone who thrives under pressure and in tense environments," Obrey said, citing an example where Lankshear celebrated a goal against Portsmouth with confidence. "He’s not someone that shrinks under that sort of pressure and he really backs himself." This mentality could prove valuable for Tottenham, especially if they face relegation, as Lankshear has gained experience against Championship defenders.
His commitment to Oxford United has also endeared him to fans, as he turned down moves to higher-end Championship teams in January to see out the season. "He has been all in for the cause," Obrey emphasized, highlighting Lankshear's personality and dedication on the pitch.
Supporting Cast: Jamie Donley's Role at Oxford
Lankshear is not the only Tottenham youngster making waves at Oxford. Jamie Donley, who joined in January, has impressed playing just behind Lankshear as a creative No. 10. Despite an injury setback on his debut, Donley has become a key link between midfield and attack, contributing with dead-ball delivery and assists. "He's good on the half-turn and has a great final ball," Obrey remarked, noting that Donley has enhanced Oxford's goal-scoring opportunities.
Based on these positive assessments, Tottenham appears to have two promising academy graduates ready to make an impact, regardless of the division they compete in next season. The combination of Lankshear's goal-scoring prowess and Donley's creativity could offer Spurs a dynamic offensive option as they navigate post-Kane era challenges.
