Tunisia Manager Herve Renard Resigns After 18 Days at World Cup 2026
Tunisia Boss Renard Quits After 18 Days at World Cup

Tunisia manager Herve Renard has announced his shock resignation after only 18 days in charge, following the team's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 57-year-old Frenchman confirmed his departure in a statement released on Instagram, thanking the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) for the opportunity to lead the side at the tournament.

Renard's Short Tenure Ends in Disappointment

Renard took over after Tunisia sacked Sabri Lamouchi, who had overseen a disastrous 5-1 defeat to Sweden in the opening Group F match. Despite hopes of a turnaround, Tunisia lost their remaining group games 4-0 to Japan and 2-0 to the Netherlands, finishing bottom of the group with no points.

In his Instagram statement, Renard said: "Before leaving, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the FTF for allowing me to participate in the 2026 World Cup. It was an honour to wear Tunisia’s colours and to live this unforgettable experience." He added: "I wish this Tunisian team the best for the future. I am convinced that it will continue to grow, to thrill an entire nation, and to write brilliant chapters in its history."

Short-Term Contract Revealed

After Tunisia's 4-0 defeat to Japan, Renard had hinted at his departure, revealing that he had only signed a short-term contract. He stated: "If they proposed to me a real long-term project, and they ask me to stay with Tunisia, then why not? I don’t see why I would refuse it. I respect the people with whom there will be conversations, and we can discuss it. I came for the World Cup, and I’m now free to choose the best project for my future."

Renard's resignation marks a swift end to his tenure, having managed the team for just over two weeks. The FTF has not yet announced a replacement, but the search for a new manager is expected to begin immediately as Tunisia looks to rebuild ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
