England defender Djed Spence is wearing a custom-made protective face brace and jaw guard during the 2026 World Cup after suffering a broken jaw in a Premier League match.
Why Is Spence Wearing a Mask?
Spence fractured his jaw in May 2026 while playing for Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The injury occurred during an aerial challenge when Chelsea striker Liam Delap struck him in the face with an elbow. Spence described it as "a crazy challenge." Despite the fracture, he played on until full-time and returned just five days later in a mask to help Tottenham beat Everton 1-0, securing their Premier League safety.
How Long Will He Need the Mask?
Medical experts estimate that his jawbone will take three months to fully heal, meaning Spence must wear the protective gear for the entirety of the World Cup. He has been wearing it in training to adapt, particularly in the heat.
What Has Spence Said About the Mask?
Spence admitted the headgear is "a little bit uncomfortable" and difficult to deal with in the heat, but jokingly reassured fans it won't affect his game because he plays football with his feet, not his jaw. "I have been wearing it in training, getting used to wearing it in the heat, and trying to break it in properly," he said.
