Reece Walsh produced one of the greatest individual performances in NRL grand final history to lead the Brisbane Broncos to a 26-24 victory over the Melbourne Storm, securing the club’s first premiership in 19 years. The 22-year-old fullback was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for his display, which included 176 metres run, 14 tackle breaks, one try and three try assists.
Walsh’s impact was not limited to attack. He made two try-saving tackles, including a crucial knock-on from Storm forward Tui Kamikamica early in the second half that shifted momentum back to Brisbane. In the final minute, with Melbourne pressing for a match-winning try, Walsh gambled on a two-on-one situation, successfully tackling Ryan Papenhuyzen to secure the victory.
The fullback also showed leadership off the ball, steadying veteran Ben Hunt after an awkward tackle left the 35-year-old staggering. Walsh cradled Hunt’s head and whispered words of calm, a stark contrast to his earlier confrontation with Papenhuyzen, where he stood over the Storm fullback menacingly after forcing a turnover.
Walsh’s post-match antics drew attention as he sipped beer from a toilet-shaped mug in the dressing room, referencing a viral social media post from earlier in the season. Coach Michael Maguire described him as a “livewire” and a “character”, adding that it was good to see his personality emerge on the biggest stage.
Commentators and journalists widely hailed Walsh’s performance as the best grand final individual display, surpassing efforts from Sam Burgess in 2014 and Nathan Cleary in 2023. Walsh himself remained humble, saying: “A good mate of mine said if you buy enough tickets in the raffle, you’re bound to win something.”
