Mexican media have disclosed the location of England's training ground ahead of their World Cup 2026 last-16 match against co-hosts Mexico, raising concerns about potential sabotage by local fans. The Three Lions are set to train at La Cantera (The Quarry), a facility owned by Liga MX side Club Universidad Nacional, also known as Pumas, according to several Mexican outlets.
Fan Disruption Fears Intensify
There are fears that thousands of Mexico fans will attempt to disrupt England's preparations by targeting their team hotel and preventing players from sleeping. This follows a similar incident where Ecuadorian fans gathered outside their team's hotel ahead of a match against Mexico, keeping players awake through the night. Ecuador's football federation lodged an official complaint with FIFA after the incident, which occurred during the last 32 round.
FIFA regulations require teams to arrive at the host city at least 24 hours before kick-off, meaning England must spend one night in Mexico. The match is scheduled for Monday at 1am BST (Sunday evening local time) at the high-altitude Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Thomas Tuchel's side advanced to the last 16 after a 2-1 victory over DR Congo.
Hotel Location Still Under Wraps
While the training ground location has been leaked, England bosses have tried to keep the team hotel's location secret. However, a hotel leak is likely once the England team bus arrives. The Football Association has received approval from FIFA to set up roadblocks around the hotel's perimeter to prevent the same scenes seen before the Ecuador game, where fans used loudspeakers, car horns, music, and motorbikes to disrupt the team.
Tuchel acknowledged the potential disruption, stating, "We will expect that of course, but what shall we do? We will bring stuff [like ear plugs] of course, but I expect everything."
Match Context and Advantages
Mexico, as co-hosts, have several advantages, including high-altitude conditions and passionate home support. The match promises to be a tough test for England, who are aiming to progress further in the tournament. The leak of the training ground adds to the challenges facing Tuchel's squad as they prepare for the fixture.
