Antonelli Wins British GP Sprint, Extends Title Lead

Kimi Antonelli won the British Grand Prix sprint race at Silverstone on Saturday, passing Lewis Hamilton on lap 9 to secure his first sprint victory and extend his championship lead to 43 points over Mercedes teammate George Russell.

Antonelli Overhauls Hamilton in Decisive Move

The 19-year-old Italian teenager, in his second Formula One season, bided his time before making a clean overtake on the Hangar Straight. Hamilton, who had taken pole for the 17-lap sprint, held the lead for the first half of the race but could not match the superior pace of Antonelli's Mercedes.

"It was a tough race to keep the Mercedes behind. I did say that was potentially the case yesterday," Hamilton said. "He came flying past. I was pushing as hard as I could. I gave it absolutely everything, but well done to Kimi, and we've got work to do to try and close that gap, so we can keep up."

Championship Implications

Antonelli now leads the world championship by 43 points over Russell and 47 points over Hamilton. Lando Norris finished third for McLaren, with Russell in fourth. The result marks Antonelli's fifth win of the season and first since the Monaco Grand Prix last month.

Race Dynamics

Hamilton and Antonelli quickly opened a five-second gap on the chasing pack. By lap seven, Antonelli was within three-tenths of a second, forcing Hamilton onto the defensive. The decisive pass came on lap nine, and Antonelli immediately pulled away, crossing the line 2.5 seconds ahead.

Hamilton's second place, while disappointing for the home crowd, showed Ferrari's improved pace. "We've got work to do to close that gap," Hamilton added, acknowledging the challenge ahead for Sunday's main race.
