Defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek lost her composure during her third-round match against Alexandra Eala on Centre Court, throwing her racket into her bag in frustration during a tense tie-break. The outburst left BBC commentators Anne Keothavong and Jo Durie visibly surprised.
Swiatek's Frustration Boils Over
The world No. 3 was pushed to a tie-break by the Filipino qualifier Eala, who had earlier knocked out Serena Williams' conqueror Maya Joint. With Eala leading 4-2 in the breaker, Swiatek hurled her racket into her bag after a series of errors. Eala went on to win the tie-break despite Swiatek's determined resistance.
BBC commentator Anne Keothavong noted, "Really has been patchy throughout this set from Iga Swiatek." Jo Durie added, "I mean to see three unforced errors in a row like that is quite shocking really from Swiatek as you know she makes so many balls usually." After the racket throw, Keothavong commented, "It's been that kind of afternoon hasn't it for the world No. 3."
Not the First Racket Smash at Wimbledon
Swiatek is not the first player to fling her racket at Wimbledon this year. Mirra Andreeva displayed similar frustration during her defeat to Barbora Krejcikova, drawing comment from BBC's Annabel Croft: "Mirra Andreeva has just smashed her racket. If that was a wooden box, it would've been smashed to smithereens - but it was smashed into her racket bag."
Swiatek's Preparation for Eala
After her second-round victory over Karolina Pliskova, Swiatek had acknowledged the challenge Eala posed. "Well, I don't particularly know her game on grass. Obviously I can watch a little bit. I know how she plays because we played already," Swiatek said. "She has a tricky game. I can assume that on grass it's even more tricky because of the surface. For sure, she's using her strengths, the change of rhythm and everything. I will prepare and I'll be ready."
Despite her preparation, Swiatek struggled to find her rhythm against the No. 29 seed, who gave the defending champion plenty to think about early in the match.
