A UK family has opened their home to raise guide dog puppies, joining more than 2,000 households volunteering with the charity Guide Dogs. Lisa Allison, a volunteer puppy raiser, says the experience has been rewarding and has connected her to a new community.
Lisa is raising her first dog, Fergall, who will soon leave for advanced training. The role of puppy raisers has become increasingly important as guide dog partnerships dropped by over a fifth during the pandemic.
Despite the emotional challenge of saying goodbye, Lisa says the tears are worth it. Guide Dogs is seeking more volunteers to help reduce waiting times for those in need of a guide dog.
